What to expect

Kamari sits on the flat east coast, and the drive to the port runs the opposite way from most transfers, inland across the middle of the island rather than along the caldera rim. It passes the vineyards and villages between the coast and the port road, joining the switchback bends only for the final drop to the quay.

Pickup is straightforward here. Almost every hotel in Kamari has a road at the door, and the promenade, the one part of the resort closed to cars, is a short flat walk from the street behind it. The simple part of this route is the start; the part that needs planning is the finish, since the driver works the pickup time backwards from your ferry's sailing time rather than a fixed clock hour.

Athinios has no real shelter from the sun or the wind, so the plan is to arrive with a little time in hand rather than long before the boat is due. In high season the switchback bends into the port can back up when two ferries load close together, and the driver builds that into the timing rather than into the price.

A saloon suits four passengers with ordinary cases. A larger group, or a family bringing back beach gear collected over the stay, should book the van.

Where the driver meets you in Kamari

  1. 1

Kamari is flat and most hotels have a road at the door, so the driver comes to the lobby. Give the hotel name when you book.

  2. 2

Hotels on the beach promenade are the exception. The promenade is closed to cars, so the driver stops on the street behind it, at the end nearest your hotel, and walks the bags through.

  3. 3

For a pickup from the beach or a restaurant, name the nearest side street to the promenade; the driver confirms the corner by message and waits 15 minutes free.

Arriving in Athinios Port

For a ride to the port the driver drops you at the ferry area at the bottom of the port road, next to where the boats load. Allow about 15 minutes from Fira and 25 from Oia, and be on the quay 45 minutes before sailing; in July and August the hairpin road down the cliff backs up when two ferries load at once, so add 15 minutes.

Questions about this route

How long does the drive from Kamari to the port take?

About 15 minutes for 10 km, crossing the middle of the island rather than the caldera road. Traffic here is lighter than on the routes towards Oia or Fira, even at the busiest sailings.

Is there a taxi rank in Kamari for a same-day ride to the port?

Not one to rely on. Taxis in Kamari come when called rather than waiting on a rank, so a booked car with a fixed time and price is the safer plan before a ferry.

Can you collect us from a hotel on the seafront promenade?

The promenade itself is closed to cars, so the driver stops on the street behind it, a short flat walk from any hotel on the front, and carries the bags through.

Do you take passengers to the port for a night ferry?

Yes, at the same price as a daytime transfer. Night sailings out of Athinios are normal, and the road across the island is quiet at that hour.
