Getting around Oia by car
Oia sits at the northern tip of the island, at the end of the caldera road from Fira. It is the place most visitors want to reach from the airport or the port, and the one place where the car cannot take you to the door. The village is pedestrian from end to end, its lanes are steps and slopes, and the road stops at the eastern edge by the bus square.
That shapes every pickup. For a ride out of Oia the driver agrees a meeting point with you the day before, based on your hotel. Most hotels are within a few minutes' walk of the bus square or of the car park above the village; caldera-side houses on the western end can be 10 minutes on foot, all of it on steps. The driver meets you where the lane allows and carries the bags to the car.
Timing matters more here than anywhere else on the island. The airport is 17 km and about 20 minutes away, Athinios port 24 km and about 30 minutes, Fira 14 km and about 15 minutes. In summer evenings the sunset crowd fills the road through Imerovigli and the approach to the village, so a pickup between 18:00 and 21:00 needs extra margin.
Ammoudi Bay, the small harbour below the village, is a separate pickup point at the bottom of the road. Finikia, the quieter village next door, is on the same road and priced the same as Oia.
Where the driver meets you in Oia

- 1
Oia's centre is closed to cars. Give us the hotel name and the driver tells you the meeting point the day before, usually the bus square or the car park by the main road.
- 2
For hotels inside the village the driver walks in to meet you at the door when the lane allows it, so the bags never cross the village on their own.
- 3
The pickup time is set for the walk. From a caldera-side house allow 10 minutes on foot to the road; the driver waits 15 minutes free at any address.
Prices from Oia
Fixed price for the whole car, saloon up to 4 passengers, VAT included, the same day and night. Vans and minibuses are priced on the booking page.
Good to know
- Sunset traffic is real. Between June and September a pickup from Oia between 18:00 and 21:00 should be booked with 15 extra minutes in mind.
- Flying out from Oia takes about 20 minutes to the airport, plus the walk to the car. Ask for a pickup 2 hours before a European flight in summer.
- A ferry from Athinios means a 30 minute drive down the cliff road. The port has no shade, so arrive 45 minutes before sailing, not earlier.
- Ammoudi Bay below Oia is a separate pickup point at the bottom of the steep road, useful after a boat trip.
Questions about Oia
Why can the taxi not come to my hotel in Oia?
The village is pedestrian, with lanes too narrow for a car. Every taxi and transfer stops at the edge, at the bus square or the car park by the main road. The driver walks in with you when the hotel is close enough.
How long does it take from Oia to the airport?
About 20 minutes for the 17 km drive, plus the walk from the hotel to the car. In summer add 10 minutes for the caldera road in the late afternoon.
Is a night pickup from Oia possible?
Yes, at any hour, at the same price. Early ferries and dawn flights are common from Oia; the driver waits at the agreed spot with the lights on.
Where is Ammoudi Bay?
Directly below Oia, at the bottom of a steep road with hairpin bends. Boats leave from there. The driver can collect you at the turning point at the bottom, so you skip the climb.
