What to expect

Athinios sits at the bottom of the caldera cliff on the west coast, and every ferry to the island docks on its quay. From the port the road climbs in a series of hairpin bends, joins the main route above Megalochori, and then runs north along the rim through Fira, Firostefani and Imerovigli before dropping into Oia. It is the same road the ferry passengers and the cruise coaches share, so the climb is the busiest stretch of the whole drive.

Oia's centre is closed to cars, so after the port road and the caldera run the last part of the trip is on foot, with the driver carrying the bags. Most hotels are a short walk from where the car stops; for houses deeper in the lanes a porter usually meets the car instead.

Summer changes the timing here more than on the shorter port routes. Ferries dock at Athinios all through the day, and between June and September the caldera road into Oia slows in the late afternoon when the sunset crowd arrives, so a ferry landing in the early evening should allow extra time for the last stretch. A night ferry is the opposite case: the quay is quiet, the road is empty, and the price is the same as at noon.

Two passengers stepping off the ferry with two cases fit the saloon easily. A family with a pram, or a group of five or more, needs the van, which has a proper boot for the beach and boat bags collected on the crossing.

Where the driver meets you at Athinios port

Ferries at the pier of Athinios port under the caldera cliff
  1. 1

Walk off the ferry and follow the crowd out of the fenced ferry area. The driver stands at the foot of the port road, just past the exit, with a sign showing the name on your booking.

  2. 2

Give us the ferry company and the port it sails from when you book. The driver checks the boat's progress before driving down, so a late ferry costs you nothing.

  3. 3

The car is parked a few steps away on the port road, not up the cliff. Waiting is free for 30 minutes from the moment the ferry docks.

  4. 4

Ferries are met at every hour, including the night boats, at the same price.

Arriving in Oia

A ride to Oia ends at the bus square area on the main road, the closest point a car can reach. From there most hotels are a few minutes on foot; the driver walks with you and the bags when the hotel is within reach, and hotels deeper in the village send a porter to the square.

Questions about this route

How long does the drive from Athinios Port to Oia take?

About 25 minutes for 22 km, most of it along the caldera road once the car is up from the port. In July and August the last stretch into Oia can add extra time, so evening arrivals should allow a margin.

What if the ferry into Athinios runs late?

Nothing changes for you. The driver checks the ferry's progress and comes down for the real docking time, and the 30 minutes of free waiting start once the boat ties up, not at the timetable time.

Can the taxi drive into the centre of Oia?

No. Cars stop at the closest point the road allows, and the driver walks the bags in when the hotel is within reach. Ask your hotel whether a porter can meet you at the stop.

Is the price per person or for the whole car?

For the whole car, VAT included. €45 covers up to four passengers in the saloon, a group of five to eight travels in the van for €60, and larger groups fit the minibus for €95.
