This route serves island hoppers landing in Santorini with a ferry booked onward the same day, rather than visitors staying on the island. The drive runs from the flat ground near the airport across the middle of the island and down the switchback road to the port on the west coast.
We follow your flight, not the ferry, so the airport half of the journey works the usual way, with the driver waiting inside the arrivals hall and 60 minutes of free waiting from the moment you land. The ferry side of the plan is yours to manage, since sailing times and delays are set by the ferry company, not by us.
Athinios itself has no town, just the quay, the ticket offices and a handful of cafés at the bottom of the cliff, so there is little reason to linger once you arrive. Bring water for the wait, since the port has almost no shade.
In July and August the road down to the port can back up when the timing bunches several ferries together, so build a wider margin into a tight connection than the drive time alone suggests. Two adults manage the saloon; a bigger group or a season's worth of luggage points to the van.

For a ride to the port the driver drops you at the ferry area at the bottom of the port road, next to where the boats load. Allow about 15 minutes from Fira and 25 from Oia, and be on the quay 45 minutes before sailing; in July and August the hairpin road down the cliff backs up when two ferries load at once, so add 15 minutes.
