Getting around Athinios Port by car

Athinios is the island's ferry port, a strip of quay at the bottom of the caldera cliff on the west coast. There is no village. Ticket offices, a few cafés and the loading area for the ferries are squeezed between the water and the rock, and every ferry from Piraeus and the other islands docks here. When a large one unloads, cars, coaches and passengers all leave by the same switchback road and for a while nothing moves fast.

Pickups are simple once you know where to look. You leave the ferry area on foot with everyone else and the driver is at the foot of the port road, sign in hand. The car is parked a few steps further along, so the bags go straight from the ramp into the boot. We ask for the ferry's name and the port it sails from when you book; the driver follows the boat and drives down for the real docking time. Waiting is free for 30 minutes after docking, and the same driver meets the night boats at the same price.

From Athinios the road climbs the cliff in a series of hairpin bends and joins the main road above Megalochori. Fira is 11 km, about 15 minutes. Oia is 22 km, about 25 minutes, most of it along the caldera road once you reach the top. Kamari and Perissa on the east and south coasts are 15 and 15 minutes. The airport is 10 km, about 10 minutes, for the people who arrive by sea and leave by air.

For the ride back to the port we work from the sailing time. The driver sets the pickup so you are on the quay 45 minutes before departure, and in July and August adds a margin because the road down fills with coaches and hire cars when two ferries load together. Ferries out of Athinios are often late in high season, and the quay has little shade and few seats. Bring water and keep the ticket to hand for the boarding check.

Where the driver meets you at Athinios port

Ferries at the pier of Athinios port under the caldera cliff
  1. 1

Walk off the ferry and follow the crowd out of the fenced ferry area. The driver stands at the foot of the port road, just past the exit, with a sign showing the name on your booking.

  2. 2

Give us the ferry company and the port it sails from when you book. The driver checks the boat's progress before driving down, so a late ferry costs you nothing.

  3. 3

The car is parked a few steps away on the port road, not up the cliff. Waiting is free for 30 minutes from the moment the ferry docks.

  4. 4

Ferries are met at every hour, including the night boats, at the same price.

Prices from Athinios Port

Good to know

  • Book the pickup for the ferry's scheduled arrival, not earlier. The driver follows the boat, so a delay at Naxos or Ios moves the pickup with it.
  • Athinios has no town. There is the quay, the ticket offices and a few cafés at the bottom of the cliff, so plan to leave straight away rather than wait around.
  • The port has a taxi rank, but when a big ferry unloads the queue outgrows it in minutes and the buses fill first. A booked driver with your name waits for you, not the other way round.
  • Night ferries land at Athinios long after the last bus. A booked car costs the same at 02:00 as at noon.
  • Most cruise ships tender to Fira Old Port, not here. Check your ship's port before you choose the pickup point.

Questions about Athinios Port

Where is Athinios port and how far is it from Fira and Oia?

Athinios is on the west coast below the cliff, reached by a switchback road. Fira is 11 km and about 15 minutes away, Oia 22 km and about 25 minutes, the airport 10 km and about 10 minutes.

What happens if my ferry is late?

Nothing changes for you. The driver checks the ferry's progress before leaving and arrives for the real docking time; the 30 minutes of free waiting start when the boat ties up, not at the timetable time.

Is there a taxi rank at Athinios port?

Yes, on the quay, but the island's taxis are few and a single large ferry unloads far more passengers than the rank can carry. It empties in minutes and refills slowly. A booked transfer has a fixed price agreed in advance and the driver is already there when you walk off.

Can you get me from Oia to an early ferry in time?

Yes, at any hour. Tell us the sailing time; we set the pickup about 25 minutes before, plus 45 minutes at the port and, in summer, a margin for the queue down the cliff road. An early ferry from Oia usually means a pickup before dawn, which costs the same as any other time.
