What to expect

Athinios and Kamari sit on opposite sides of the island, so this route skips the caldera road most transfers use and instead cuts across the middle, past the inland villages and the vineyards, before dropping to the flat east coast. It is a different kind of drive from the port routes to Fira or Oia, with fewer bends and a longer straight stretch once the car is off the cliff.

Kamari itself makes the arrival simple. The resort is flat, built on a grid behind a long beach, and almost every hotel has a road at the door; the only exception is the row of hotels on the seafront promenade, which is closed to cars, where the driver stops on the street behind it. Coming straight off a ferry with cases is easier here than almost anywhere else on the island.

Ferries dock at Athinios at every hour of the day and night, and a driver meets each one at the same fixed price, so a late boat or a night sailing changes nothing about the fare. Planes land at the airport up the coast from Kamari, but that is a different pickup point entirely; this route is for passengers arriving by sea.

A saloon carries four passengers and their cases without trouble. A larger group, or anyone bringing back boards, buggies or a heap of beach bags, should book the van for the extra space.

Where the driver meets you at Athinios port

Ferries at the pier of Athinios port under the caldera cliff
  1. 1

Walk off the ferry and follow the crowd out of the fenced ferry area. The driver stands at the foot of the port road, just past the exit, with a sign showing the name on your booking.

  2. 2

Give us the ferry company and the port it sails from when you book. The driver checks the boat's progress before driving down, so a late ferry costs you nothing.

  3. 3

The car is parked a few steps away on the port road, not up the cliff. Waiting is free for 30 minutes from the moment the ferry docks.

  4. 4

Ferries are met at every hour, including the night boats, at the same price.

Arriving in Kamari

A ride to Kamari ends at the hotel door for hotels on the streets, or at the end of the side street nearest the promenade for hotels on the seafront, where cars are not allowed. The driver walks the bags the last stretch. From the airport the ride is about 10 minutes, from Athinios port about 15.

Questions about this route

How far is Kamari from Athinios port?

About 15 minutes for 10 km, crossing the middle of the island rather than following the caldera rim. The road is quieter than the route to Oia or Fira, even in August.

Can the taxi reach the hotel door in Kamari?

Almost always. Kamari is flat and laid out on a grid, and only the seafront promenade is closed to cars. The driver stops on the street behind it for hotels right on the beach.

What if my ferry is delayed?

Nothing changes for you. The driver tracks the ferry and comes down for the real docking time, and the 30 minutes of free waiting start once the boat ties up.

Is Kamari far from the other resorts?

It sits under the flank of Mesa Vouno, on the opposite side of the island from the port. Perissa is close on the map but there is no road across the mountain, so that drive goes round.
