What to expect

Perissa is the furthest resort from Athinios on the island, at the south-eastern foot of Mesa Vouno, so this is one of the longer port transfers. The road runs inland from the quay, past the villages and vineyards in the middle of the island, then down the hill through Emporio to the flat stretch behind the beach.

That distance is worth knowing before you book, since it changes the shape of a same-day plan more than a short hop to Fira would. Once the car reaches Perissa the arrival itself is easy: the village is flat, laid out along one long beach road, and the driver reaches almost every hotel door directly, with only the narrowest lanes needing a short walk from the corner.

Ferries into Athinios run at every hour, including through the night, and this route costs the same whichever one you are on. Perivolos, the southern half of the same beach, shares Perissa's price zone, so a hotel there is booked the same way and costs the same to reach.

A saloon takes four passengers with ordinary cases. A larger group, or anyone with a spread of beach and boat luggage from an island-hopping trip, should book the van instead.

Where the driver meets you at Athinios port

Ferries at the pier of Athinios port under the caldera cliff
  1. 1

Walk off the ferry and follow the crowd out of the fenced ferry area. The driver stands at the foot of the port road, just past the exit, with a sign showing the name on your booking.

  2. 2

Give us the ferry company and the port it sails from when you book. The driver checks the boat's progress before driving down, so a late ferry costs you nothing.

  3. 3

The car is parked a few steps away on the port road, not up the cliff. Waiting is free for 30 minutes from the moment the ferry docks.

  4. 4

Ferries are met at every hour, including the night boats, at the same price.

Arriving in Perissa

A ride to Perissa ends at the hotel door on the beach road or in the lanes behind it; where a lane is too narrow to turn in, the driver stops at the corner and walks the bags. About 20 minutes from the airport, 15 from Athinios port and 20 from Fira, with the last stretch down the hill from Emporio, wide and quick at any hour.

Questions about this route

How far is Perissa from Athinios port?

About 15 minutes for 11 km, the longest of the port-to-resort drives, crossing the island on the inland road down through Emporio rather than the caldera route.

Is Perivolos priced the same as Perissa?

Yes. Perivolos is the southern stretch of the same beach and sits in the same price zone, so a hotel there costs the same as one in Perissa.

What if our ferry into Athinios runs late?

Nothing changes for you. The driver tracks the ferry and comes down for the real docking time, and the 30 minutes of free waiting start once the boat ties up, not at the printed time.

Can the car reach my hotel in Perissa?

Almost always. The village is flat and built along the beach road, and the driver reaches nearly every door; for a hotel in a narrow lane, the car stops at the corner and the bags go the rest of the way on foot.
