Getting around Fira by car
Fira is the island's capital and our base. The town runs along the top of the caldera cliff, with the bus station and the taxi rank at the top of the main road and the cable car to the old port at the edge of the pedestrian centre. Hotels on the main road and in the streets behind it are reached by car. Hotels on the caldera side hang below the walkway and are reached by steps, and that is the whole story of pickups in Fira, which side of the walkway your hotel is on.
For a caldera-side hotel the driver stops on the nearest road, walks down to the hotel when the lane allows and carries the bags up. For a hotel with a street address the car comes to the door. Either way the meeting point is agreed the day before from the hotel name, and the driver waits 15 minutes free. Late at night the pedestrian centre is quiet and the driver can get closer; in the evening rush around the cable car the last street fills with tour buses and the meeting point moves up the road.
Distances are short but the roads are not empty. The airport is 6 km, about 5 minutes across the middle of the island. Athinios port is 9 km, about 10 minutes, the last part on the switchback road down the cliff. Oia is 11 km, about 15 minutes along the caldera road through Firostefani and Imerovigli, and in summer that road is slow from late afternoon until after sunset in both directions. Kamari and Perissa are 10 and 15 minutes.
Fira works at night. Restaurants close late, the bars later, and the buses stop long before. A booked car at the same price at three in the morning as at midday is the reliable way home to Kamari, Perissa or an outlying hotel. Name the nearest square, the cable-car station or a bar the driver knows, and be at the meeting point on time.
Where the driver meets you in Fira

Fira has two halves. Hotels on the main road and in the streets behind it get the car at the door; hotels on the caldera side sit below the pedestrian walkway, down steps a car cannot use.

For a caldera-side hotel the driver tells you the meeting point the day before, usually the road nearest the hotel's steps, and walks down to help with the bags when the lane allows.

For a pickup from the centre, the driver names a spot on the ring road or by the cable-car top station. Waiting is free for 15 minutes at any address.

Give the hotel name and the number of bags when you book; the driver knows which street sits above which steps.

Good to know
- Fira's taxi rank is on Theotokopoulos Square, a few minutes on foot from the bus station. In summer the queue there is long from late afternoon, when everyone heads to Oia for sunset.
- Sunset traffic runs both ways here. Between June and September a ride out of Fira between 18:00 and 20:00 needs a margin, and the road back from Oia stays slow until well after dark.
- Night pickups from the bars and restaurants are easy. Name the nearest square or the cable-car station, the driver waits there, and the price is the same after midnight.
- The cable-car top station is the landmark that works for everyone, from cruise passengers to anyone lost in the lanes after dinner.
- Steps are the limit, not the car. Wheeled cases are fine on the road; on the caldera lanes the driver carries them, so tell us how many you have.

Is there a taxi station in Fira?
Yes. The rank is on Theotokopoulos Square, near the top of the main road, a few minutes on foot from the bus station. Taxis are few and the rank runs out at the busy hours; a booked transfer waits for you at a fixed price.
Can the taxi reach my hotel in Fira?
If the hotel has a road at the door, yes. Many caldera-side hotels lie below the pedestrian walkway and are reached by steps; for those the driver stops at the closest road and carries the bags to the door when the lane allows.
How far is Fira from the airport, the port and Oia?
The airport is 6 km away, about 5 minutes across the island. Athinios port is 9 km, about 10 minutes, the last part down the cliff road. Oia is 11 km, about 15 minutes along the caldera, longer at sunset in summer.
Do you do short rides inside Fira, to Firostefani for example?
Yes. Firostefani and the cable-car station are in the same price zone as Fira, so a hop between them is the zone's inside price, €20, for the whole car.
What about late-night rides from Fira's bars?
Any hour, same price. Tell us the bar or the square, and the driver waits at the nearest point a car can stop; the pedestrian centre is closed to cars, so the walk to the car is part of the plan.
