What to expect

Perissa sits at the far south-eastern end of the island, so the drive from Fira takes the inland road rather than the caldera route, past Pyrgos and down through Emporio before the ground flattens out towards the coast. It is a longer trip than the one to Kamari, since Perissa is further from the capital in every direction.

Once the car reaches the resort, the arrival is easy. Perissa is flat and built along one long beach road, and the driver reaches almost every hotel directly; only the narrowest lanes behind the beach road need a short walk from the corner. Perivolos, the southern half of the same beach, is booked and priced exactly the same way.

Because the drive takes longer than to the closer resorts, a day trip to the beach benefits from setting both the outward and return times in advance rather than deciding on the day, especially if the plan includes lunch or an afternoon on the sand before heading back.

A saloon covers a family with the usual beach bags and a couple of cases. A larger group, or one bringing boards, umbrellas or other bulky gear, should book the van for the extra space.

Where the driver meets you in Fira

Fira on the cliff edge with the old port and the caldera below
  1. 1

Fira has two halves. Hotels on the main road and in the streets behind it get the car at the door; hotels on the caldera side sit below the pedestrian walkway, down steps a car cannot use.

  2. 2

For a caldera-side hotel the driver tells you the meeting point the day before, usually the road nearest the hotel's steps, and walks down to help with the bags when the lane allows.

  3. 3

For a pickup from the centre, the driver names a spot on the ring road or by the cable-car top station. Waiting is free for 15 minutes at any address.

  4. 4

Give the hotel name and the number of bags when you book; the driver knows which street sits above which steps.

Arriving in Perissa

A ride to Perissa ends at the hotel door on the beach road or in the lanes behind it; where a lane is too narrow to turn in, the driver stops at the corner and walks the bags. About 20 minutes from the airport, 15 from Athinios port and 20 from Fira, with the last stretch down the hill from Emporio, wide and quick at any hour.

Questions about this route

How far is Perissa from Fira?

About 15 minutes for 13 km, inland past Pyrgos and Emporio rather than along the caldera. It is a longer drive than the one to Kamari, since Perissa sits at the far south-eastern corner of the island.

Can we book a return leg for the same day?

Yes. Book the outward leg for the morning and the return for whenever you plan to leave the beach, and the driver comes back to the same drop-off point on the beach road.

Is Perivolos the same booking as Perissa?

They share one beach and one price zone, so a hotel in either is booked and priced the same way from Fira.

Do you take passengers to Perissa at night?

Yes, at the same fixed price as during the day. Perissa's evenings run later than the local buses, so a booked car back is normal.
