What to expect
Kamari sits on the flat east coast, under the flank of Mesa Vouno, and the drive there from Fira runs down through Messaria before dropping to the coast, a different kind of road from the caldera routes towards Oia. It is one of the shorter village-to-resort trips on the island, which makes it an easy half-day or full-day plan from a base in Fira.
Arrival is simple once the car reaches Kamari. Almost every hotel has a road at the door, and the beach promenade, the one part of the resort closed to cars, is a short flat walk from the street behind it. Coming down for the beach rather than a hotel stay works the same way: name the taverna or the beach bar and the driver waits at the nearest point a car can stop.
Planes on the approach to the airport pass close to the northern end of Kamari's beach, which is worth knowing if the drive doubles as a way to see them land before an evening flight of your own. In the other direction, an evening out at one of the promenade's restaurants is a common booking, since the buses back to Fira thin out early.
A saloon suits a family with beach bags and a couple of cases. A group travelling down together for the day, or anyone with boards or a lot of gear, should book the van.
Where the driver meets you in Fira

- 1
Fira has two halves. Hotels on the main road and in the streets behind it get the car at the door; hotels on the caldera side sit below the pedestrian walkway, down steps a car cannot use.
- 2
For a caldera-side hotel the driver tells you the meeting point the day before, usually the road nearest the hotel's steps, and walks down to help with the bags when the lane allows.
- 3
For a pickup from the centre, the driver names a spot on the ring road or by the cable-car top station. Waiting is free for 15 minutes at any address.
- 4
Give the hotel name and the number of bags when you book; the driver knows which street sits above which steps.
Arriving in Kamari
A ride to Kamari ends at the hotel door for hotels on the streets, or at the end of the side street nearest the promenade for hotels on the seafront, where cars are not allowed. The driver walks the bags the last stretch. From the airport the ride is about 10 minutes, from Athinios port about 15.

Good to know
- Almost every hotel in Kamari has a road to the door, so the only walk on this route is the last few steps at a seafront hotel.
- For a beach day rather than a hotel, name the taverna or the beach bar; the driver waits 15 minutes free at any address.
- Planes land close to Kamari's beach on the approach to the airport, which makes for a good view on the way in.
- A saloon suits families with beach bags. A larger group heading down together should book the van.
Questions about this route
How long does it take to get to Kamari beach from Fira?
About 10 minutes for 8 km, through Messaria and down towards the coast. It is one of the quicker village-to-resort drives on the island.
Can we book a return trip for the same day?
Yes. Book the outward leg for the morning and a return leg for whenever you plan to leave the beach, and the driver comes back to the same drop-off point.
Is Kamari a good base for a family with young children?
The resort is flat, with a road to almost every hotel door, which makes arriving with a pram or a lot of beach gear simpler than in a caldera village.
Do you take passengers to Kamari at night for dinner?
Yes, at the same price as by day. Kamari's promenade has restaurants that run into the evening, and the driver waits at the nearest side street for hotels on the seafront.
