What to expect
Fira is the closest town to the airport with a real choice of hotels, so it is often the first stop for visitors who want to start the holiday within minutes of landing. The road runs west across the middle of the island, past the vineyards and the villages around Messaria, then climbs the last stretch into the capital.
Because the drive is short, the biggest variable is not the road but the town itself. Cruise days bring coach parties into the streets around the cable car from mid-morning, and the last few hundred metres to a hotel can take longer on foot than the whole drive from the airport.
Cases are rarely a problem here. A saloon carries two people and their luggage without trouble; a family or a group of five or more needs the van, which has the boot space that a week's shopping tends to add to the return trip.
Landing after dark changes nothing about the price and very little about the drive. The road is quieter at night, the town itself is the part that takes longer to move through once the bars are busy, and the driver still carries the bags to the door or to the nearest point the lane allows.
Where the driver meets you at the airport

- 1
Santorini Airport has one terminal. After the baggage belt there is one exit into the arrivals hall.
- 2
The driver stands facing that exit holding a sign with the name from your booking.
- 3
The car is parked a short walk away. Waiting is free for 60 minutes after landing when we have your flight number.
Arriving in Fira
A ride to Fira ends at the door when the hotel is on a road, or at the top of the nearest steps when it is on the caldera side. The driver walks the bags to the hotel where the lane allows; hotels further down can send a porter up to the road. The drive is about 5 minutes from the airport and 10 up from Athinios port.

Good to know
- Fira is close enough that even a delayed flight rarely changes the plan. The driver tracks the landing time and waits without charge for 60 minutes.
- Cruise days and market mornings fill the streets around the cable car from mid-morning. A short ride can still take longer than expected in that window.
- Night flights land to an empty road. The short drive in from the airport is often quicker after dark than during the day.
- Give the exact hotel name when you book. A few caldera-side properties share similar names in the centre of town.
Questions about this route
How long is the drive from the airport to Fira?
About 10 minutes for 8 km, the shortest route on the island. Even in the middle of a busy afternoon the ride rarely stretches much beyond that.
Is Fira a good base for a short stay?
Yes. Being close to the airport means less time lost to transfers at each end of the trip, which suits a short break better than a base further along the caldera.
Do you meet flights that land late at night?
Yes, at the same fixed price as a daytime landing. The driver follows the flight and is in the arrivals hall for the real landing time, whatever the hour.
Can the car reach my hotel in the centre of Fira?
Many hotels have a road to the door. Others sit below the pedestrian walkway on the caldera side, reached by steps, in which case the driver stops at the closest point and carries the bags in.
