Imerovigli sits on the highest point of the caldera, and arriving there means a drive across the island followed by a short walk down from the road to the hotel itself. The airport road climbs steadily from the flat east coast, joins the caldera route above Fira, and reaches the village a little further along the rim.
The last stretch is where the timing changes most. Between June and September the road along the top of the caldera slows in the late afternoon as the sunset crowd arrives from Fira and heads on towards Oia, and Imerovigli sits right in that stretch.
Luggage is the other thing to plan for. The car reaches the road above the village without trouble, but most hotels are down a lane or a flight of steps from there, so a case with wheels is easier than a hard-sided one, and the driver carries what does not roll.
Arrivals after dark are common here, since many flights land in the evening. The price does not change after midnight, and the driver waits at the top of the lane with the lights on until reception or the bags are sorted out.
