The route runs back along the caldera rim through Imerovigli and Firostefani, the same road as the trip out, and a car booked in advance is waiting at the bus square rather than joining the crowd looking for one on the spot.
Later in the evening the picture changes completely. Fira keeps its restaurants and bars open long after Oia has gone quiet, so a ride from Oia to Fira for dinner or a night out is a common booking, and the road at that hour is empty compared with the sunset rush a few hours earlier.
This is also the route for moving on rather than just visiting, a hotel change from a stay in Oia to a night or two based in Fira.
