Cases travel from the hotel to the meeting point down lanes and steps before the drive even begins, then the road takes over, first past Imerovigli and Firostefani along the caldera rim, then down through Fira and out across the flatter middle of the island towards Monolithos and the airport.

Before the shops open, and long before the sunset crowd builds later on, the caldera road is at its quietest, so an early flight is rarely delayed by traffic. A late-morning or midday departure meets more resistance once coach tours and hire cars fill the road through Fira.
