Getting around Kamari by car
Kamari is the beach resort closest to the airport, on the east coast under the flank of Mesa Vouno. It is flat, laid out on a grid behind a long black-pebble beach, and its promenade along the seafront is for people on foot. Almost every hotel has a road at the door; the ones that do not are on the promenade, a short flat walk from the nearest side street. Planes land over the northern end of the beach, close enough to read the airline.
Pickups here are the simplest on the island. The driver comes to the lobby, or to the side street nearest a seafront hotel, and waits 15 minutes free. For an evening pickup from the promenade's restaurants, name the restaurant and the driver tells you which corner the car can reach. The road to the terminal is 6 km, about 10 minutes, so an airport pickup is a short ride even at the busiest time of day.
Everywhere else takes longer than the airport. Fira is 8 km, about 10 minutes, through Messaria and up the hill. Oia is 19 km and about 25 minutes, more on a summer evening; a sunset trip from Kamari is a two-leg booking with the driver waiting at the Oia bus square for the ride back in the dark. Perissa is on the far side of the mountain with no road across, so the drive goes round, about 20 minutes. Athinios port is 10 km, about 15 minutes.
Ancient Thera stands on the mountain above the resort. The switchback road up ends at a car park short of the site, and the driver can drop you there and collect you later. Monolithos, the family beach north of the airport, shares Kamari's price zone. Kamari has an evening life of its own, and the buses back to Fira thin out early; a booked car home costs the same after midnight.

- The airport is next door. Landing planes come in low over the northern end of the beach, and the drive from the terminal is one of the shortest airport rides on the island.

Yes, to the car park at the top of the switchback road above Kamari, the closest point by car; the last stretch to the site is on foot. Opening days and hours change with the season, so check them before you go. Book the return as a second leg, or an hourly driver if you want the car to wait.
