Perissa to Oia by private taxi

A taxi from Perissa to Oia costs from €50 for the whole car, VAT included, for the sunset run from the far side of the island. The drive is 26 km and takes about 30 minutes, the longest of the resort-to-Oia trips, more again once summer sunset traffic builds.

What to expect

Perissa sits at the far south-eastern corner of the island and Oia at the northern tip, so this is the longest of the sunset drives from any beach resort, crossing back through Emporio and the inland villages before joining the caldera road at Fira for the run north through Firostefani and Imerovigli.

The distance makes timing the whole point of booking this route well. Between June and September the caldera road slows from mid-afternoon, long before the sun is due to set, and a drive that already takes longer than any other resort-to-Oia trip needs the extra margin built in from the start rather than added at the last minute.

Oia has no taxi rank for the crowd heading home after sunset, and everyone leaving the village funnels onto the same road at once, so the return leg is booked alongside the outward one rather than arranged after the fact. The driver waits at the bus square area, the closest point a car reaches, at the time agreed in advance.

A saloon suits two to four passengers making the trip. A larger group travelling up from the beach for the evening should book the van, so the long drive is one trip rather than two.

Where the driver meets you in Perissa

Perissa beach and village seen from Mesa Vouno
  1. 1

Perissa is flat and built along one long beach road, so the car reaches the door of almost every hotel. Give the hotel name and the driver comes to the lobby.

  2. 2

For hotels in the lanes behind the beach road, the driver stops at the nearest corner the car can turn in and walks the bags the rest, rarely more than a minute.

  3. 3

Beach pickups work from the square where the main road reaches the beach, by the bus stop, or from any point on the beach road you name, with 15 minutes of free waiting.

Arriving in Oia

A ride to Oia ends at the bus square area on the main road, the closest point a car can reach. From there most hotels are a few minutes on foot; the driver walks with you and the bags when the hotel is within reach, and hotels deeper in the village send a porter to the square.

Questions about this route

How long is the drive from Perissa to Oia?

About 30 minutes for 26 km on a normal afternoon, the longest of the sunset drives from the beach resorts, since Perissa and Oia sit at opposite ends of the island. In high season the final stretch into Oia adds more time still.

Can the driver wait and bring us back to Perissa?

Yes, book the return as a second leg in the same booking. The driver waits at the bus square area in Oia at the time you set, rather than you finding a car once the crowd starts moving.

Does Perivolos work the same way for this route?

Yes. Perivolos shares Perissa's price zone, so a hotel there is booked exactly the same way for the trip to Oia.

Is there a shorter option for sunset from Perissa?

Fira and Imerovigli both sit on the caldera with sunset views and a shorter drive than the full run to Oia, worth asking about if the evening is tightly timed.
