Getting around Perissa by car

Perissa lies at the south-eastern corner of the island, at the foot of Mesa Vouno, on a long beach of black sand. The village is flat and low, strung along the beach road with lanes running back from it, and the car reaches nearly every hotel door. The mountain blocks the way to Kamari, so Perissa is reached from the inland side, down the hill from Emporio, and it is the last stop for most rides from the airport and the port.

That distance is why late arrivals matter here. Perissa is about 20 minutes from the airport, 14 km, and the last buses are long gone when the evening flights land. A booked driver waits inside the arrivals hall with your name, follows the flight if it is delayed and takes you to the door at the same price at any hour. Athinios port is 11 km, about 15 minutes; Fira 15 km, about 20 minutes.

Pickups are easy. Hotels on the beach road get the car at the door; for a hotel in a lane too narrow to turn in, the driver stops at the corner and walks the bags. For a pickup from the beach or a taverna, the square at the end of the main road is the easy landmark, and any spot on the beach road works too. The driver waits 15 minutes free.

Perivolos, the southern half of the same beach, shares Perissa's price zone, and so does everything between them. Oia is the far end of the island from here, about 30 minutes, and a sunset trip means booking both legs so the driver is waiting when you come back down to the bus square. Kamari looks close across the mountain but the drive goes round, about 20 minutes.

Where the driver meets you in Perissa

Perissa beach and village seen from Mesa Vouno
  1. 1

Perissa is flat and built along one long beach road, so the car reaches the door of almost every hotel. Give the hotel name and the driver comes to the lobby.

  2. 2

For hotels in the lanes behind the beach road, the driver stops at the nearest corner the car can turn in and walks the bags the rest, rarely more than a minute.

  3. 3

Beach pickups work from the square where the main road reaches the beach, by the bus stop, or from any point on the beach road you name, with 15 minutes of free waiting.

Good to know

  • Late-night arrivals are normal here. The buses from the airport stop in the evening and Perissa is the far end of the island; a booked car meets your flight at the same price at any hour.
  • Perissa and Perivolos share one beach and one price zone. A hotel in Perivolos is priced as Perissa, so book under whichever name your hotel uses.
  • Kamari is on the other side of Mesa Vouno with no road across the mountain. By car it is about 20 minutes round the inland side.
  • Oia is the far end of the island from here, 30 minutes each way. For sunset, book both legs together so the driver is waiting at the Oia bus square when the crowd starts down.
  • The path up to Ancient Thera starts behind the village. It is a walk, not a drive; the car goes round to the Kamari side if you want to ride up.

Questions about Perissa

How do I get from the airport to Perissa late at night?

Book the transfer for your landing time. The driver waits in the arrivals hall with your name, follows the flight if it is late, and drives you to the hotel door in about 20 minutes. The price is €35 for the whole car, the same at 01:00 as at midday.

How far is Perissa from Fira and the port?

Fira is 15 km away, about 20 minutes over the hill. Athinios port is 11 km, about 15 minutes, up over the middle of the island and down the cliff road. The airport is 14 km and takes about 20 minutes.

Is Perivolos the same place as Perissa?

They join along the same beach. Perissa is the northern end by the mountain, Perivolos the southern stretch with the beach clubs. For prices they are one zone, so a hotel in either costs the same to reach.

Can you take a group with beach gear and cases?

Yes. Up to 4 people with cases in a saloon, 5 to 8 in a van, up to 20 in a minibus. Tell us the number of bags at booking; boards and buggies need the van.
