What to expect

Perissa lies at the far south-eastern corner of the island, so the road to the port is the longest of the resort-to-port drives. It climbs back up through Emporio and the inland villages before joining the route down to Athinios, the reverse of the journey most arriving passengers make.

The start of the ride is easy. Perissa is flat and strung along one beach road, so the car reaches almost every hotel directly; only a lane too narrow to turn in means a short walk with the bags to the corner. From there the distance across the island is what shapes the timing, more than any other part of the trip.

Because the drive is longer than from the resorts closer to the port, the pickup time is set with a wider margin in mind, especially in July and August when the switchback bends into Athinios can back up if two ferries are loading together. Perivolos, the southern half of the same beach, is booked and priced exactly as Perissa.

A saloon suits four passengers with cases. A larger group, or a family with a season's worth of beach gear to bring home, should book the van for the extra boot space.

Where the driver meets you in Perissa

Perissa beach and village seen from Mesa Vouno
  1. 1

Perissa is flat and built along one long beach road, so the car reaches the door of almost every hotel. Give the hotel name and the driver comes to the lobby.

  2. 2

For hotels in the lanes behind the beach road, the driver stops at the nearest corner the car can turn in and walks the bags the rest, rarely more than a minute.

  3. 3

Beach pickups work from the square where the main road reaches the beach, by the bus stop, or from any point on the beach road you name, with 15 minutes of free waiting.

Arriving in Athinios Port

For a ride to the port the driver drops you at the ferry area at the bottom of the port road, next to where the boats load. Allow about 15 minutes from Fira and 25 from Oia, and be on the quay 45 minutes before sailing; in July and August the hairpin road down the cliff backs up when two ferries load at once, so add 15 minutes.

Questions about this route

How long does the drive from Perissa to the port take?

About 15 minutes for 11 km, the longest of the resort-to-port drives, back up through Emporio and across the middle of the island to the quay.

We are staying in Perivolos. Does that change the price?

No. Perivolos shares Perissa's price zone, so book under either name and the fare and pickup work the same way.

Is there a taxi rank in Perissa for a same-day ride?

Not a reliable one. Taxis come when called rather than waiting on a rank, so for a ferry that cannot be missed, a booked car with a fixed time is the safer choice.

Do you collect passengers for very early sailings?

Yes, for any sailing time, at the same fixed price as a midday transfer. Give us the sailing time when you book and the driver sets the pickup around the drive.
