What to expect

Most cruise passengers reach Santorini by ship, but this route serves the smaller group flying in to join one, either on embarkation day itself or the day before. The drive from the airport crosses the island to Fira, ending not at the water but at the cable-car top station above it.

No road reaches the old port, so the taxi's job ends at the top station. From there the cable car, the stepped path or a donkey covers the drop to the tender, and the timing of that last stage is worth building into the day rather than assuming the drive alone sets the schedule.

Boarding cutoffs are set by the cruise line, not by us, so work backwards from that time rather than from the ship's advertised sailing time. A flight delay on landing is covered by the usual 60 minutes of free waiting, but the margin below the cutoff is still yours to manage.

Luggage for a cruise tends to run to more and heavier cases than a week at a hotel, so tell us the count when you book. Two people with normal luggage take the saloon, and a family or a larger case count is better suited to the van.

Where the driver meets you at the airport

The terminal building of Santorini Airport, where drivers wait at the arrivals exit
  1. 1

Santorini Airport has one terminal. After the baggage belt there is one exit into the arrivals hall.

  2. 2

The driver stands facing that exit holding a sign with the name from your booking.

  3. 3

The car is parked a short walk away. Waiting is free for 60 minutes after landing when we have your flight number.

Arriving in Fira Old Port

A ride back to the ship ends at the same top station; cars stop on the street beside it and you walk the last stretch to the cable car. Allow about 15 minutes from Oia and 15 from Akrotiri, plus the queue for the cable car down, which builds in the last hour before the final tender. Aim to reach the station well before your ship's all-aboard time.

Questions about this route

Can the taxi take me to the ship itself?

No. No road reaches the old port, so the driver takes you to the cable-car top station in Fira and you go down to the tender by cable car, on foot down the path, or by donkey.

How much time should I leave between landing and boarding?

Add the 10 minute drive, the cable-car queue down, and the tender crossing, then keep a margin against your ship's boarding cutoff rather than cutting it fine on a same-day arrival.

What if my flight is delayed on embarkation day?

The driver still follows your flight and waits with 60 minutes free after landing. From there the drive to the top station takes its usual length, so build any delay into the cutoff time you were already working towards.

Is this route only for flying in to join a ship?

Mostly, yes. Most cruise passengers arrive by ship rather than by air, so this page serves the smaller group flying in on embarkation day itself, or arriving a day ahead to board.
