Every price and time on this page comes from our price list and route data, not from an estimate.
Oia is at the northern tip of the island and the airport is on the flat east coast near Monolithos, so every way there crosses the island and then follows the caldera rim. By car the distance is 17 km. What changes between the options is how long you wait before you start moving, and where you are dropped.
The options by road
| Option | Time | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Booked private transfer | About 20 minutes from the terminal to the bus square | Driver inside the arrivals hall with your name, 60 minutes free waiting after landing, €40 for the whole saloon, paid in advance |
| Taxi from the rank | The same drive once you have a car | Queue outside the terminal, no cars when several flights land together, fare agreed with the driver, ask about card payment before you get in |
| Bus with a change at Fira | Well over an hour, more with the wait | Airport bus to Fira's bus station, change to the Oia line, a few euros per ticket, luggage in the hold, the walk from Oia's bus square, thinner service in the evening |
| Hire car | The drive plus the pickup at the rental desks | Small roads, parking outside Oia's centre, high-season demand for automatics, then the car sits idle in a village you explore on foot |
For a couple with two suitcases the transfer is the option that gets you to the hotel without carrying anything uphill. For a family or five friends the van, €55 for the whole car, covers everyone in one trip. The booked ride is described in full on the airport to Oia route page.
The road
Leaving the airport you are at sea level, with every hotel on the island above you. The road heads inland, climbs to the ridge at Fira and joins the caldera road there. The rest is the rim: Firostefani, Imerovigli, then the drop into Oia at the northern tip. The single road into Oia is where summer adds time, from late afternoon when the sunset traffic builds.
Where you get out in Oia
No car goes into Oia's centre. The driver stops at the bus square area on the main road, which is as close as the road allows, and walks the bags with you to hotels within a short distance. For houses deep in the village the hotel usually sends a porter to the square; tell us the hotel name when you book and we know what to expect. The Oia page has the details for the return pickup, which starts from the same spot.
Arriving at night
Flights land after midnight all summer. The bus is not a plan for that hour, the rank outside is thin or empty, and a booked driver is inside the hall at the same price as at noon. Give us the flight number: the driver follows the flight, so a delay changes nothing for you, and the 60 minutes of free waiting count from the real landing. The night taxi page covers late arrivals and dawn departures.
Which car
The saloon takes up to 4 passengers and their cases. From the fifth passenger, or with a pram and a pile of bags, book the van. Child seats for infants, toddlers and older children are fitted when you ask for them at booking. Groups of 9 to 20 travel together in the minibus; see group and minibus transfers.
Going back to the airport
The pickup in Oia starts at the bus square area, so allow a few minutes to walk down from the hotel with the bags, plus about 20 minutes for the drive and your airline's check-in time. The Oia to Santorini Airport page covers the timing for morning flights, and the airport page explains the meeting point for the next arrival.
Questions
How long does it take from Santorini Airport to Oia?
About 20 minutes by car on a normal day, for 17 km. In July and August the last stretch through Imerovigli and into Oia slows in the late afternoon, so allow an extra quarter of an hour then.
Is there a direct bus from Santorini Airport to Oia?
No. The airport bus goes to Fira, where you change to the Oia line. Tickets cost a few euros each and luggage goes in the hold, but the change, the wait and the walk from Oia's bus square add up to well over an hour, and evening services thin out.
How much is a taxi from Santorini Airport to Oia?
From €40 for the whole saloon, up to 4 passengers, VAT included, the same at night. The van for 5 to 8 passengers is €55. Booked and paid online, so the price cannot change on the day.
Can the car drive into Oia?
No car can. Oia's centre is pedestrian. The driver stops at the bus square area on the main road, the closest point the road allows, and carries the bags to hotels within a short walk.
