Once you reach the road the drive is straightforward, back along the caldera past Fira and down across the middle of the island towards the airport. It is one of the more reliable drives on the island precisely because it runs against the direction most sunset traffic travels.
The exception is a summer evening, when cars heading the other way towards Oia can back up along the same stretch of road and slow a pickup reaching the village in the first place. Booking a little earlier than the drive time suggests covers that.
