What to expect

Akrotiri sits at the far south-western corner of the island, and a flight home from here means one of the longer same-side drives most visitors make, back across to the airport on the flat eastern edge. Because no taxi rank serves this stretch, the return leg has to be booked ahead rather than picked up on the day.

The three starting points, the village, the archaeological site and Red Beach, are all a short distance apart on the same road, so tell us which one the pickup begins at. A day that ends with the site or the beach before a flight works well as a single booking, with the car waiting between stops.

Red Beach pickups happen at the car park where the tarmac ends, since the sand itself is a walk over rock from there. Salt and sand on cases and towels are common leaving this stretch of coast, so a rinse and a shake-out before loading the car saves time at the other end.

The saloon covers two people with the usual luggage, and the van suits a larger group or extra beach gear. Whatever the hour of the flight, give the flight number when booking so the pickup is set for the real departure rather than the printed time.

Where the driver meets you in Akrotiri

  1. 1

Akrotiri is three places on one road, the village on the hill, the archaeological site below it near the coast, and Red Beach a few minutes further on. Say which one when you book.

  2. 2

At the site, the driver waits in the car park by the entrance. At Red Beach, at the car park where the tarmac ends; the beach itself is a walk over rocks. In the village, at the hotel or the closest point a car can turn.

  3. 3

For a return from the lighthouse, the driver waits at the end of the road by the lighthouse gate. Waiting is free for 15 minutes at any of these points.

Arriving in the airport

For a ride to the airport the driver drops you at the departures entrance. Allow about 10 minutes for the drive from Fira and 20 from Oia, plus the airline's check-in time; in July and August add 10 minutes for traffic on the caldera road.

Questions about this route

Is there a taxi rank near Red Beach or the archaeological site?

No. Cars come to Akrotiri only when booked, so a flight home from here should be arranged in advance rather than left to chance on the day.

How long is the drive back to the airport?

About 15 minutes for 12 km, across to the flatter east side of the island. The road itself is straightforward once the car has been booked in good time.

Can I be collected straight from Red Beach for a flight?

Yes. The driver waits at the car park above the beach, the closest point a car reaches, so allow a few minutes to walk back from the sand with the bags.

What about a flight the same day as visiting the site?

That works well. Book the site as the first stop and the airport as the last, with the car waiting at each point in between, so the cases never leave the boot until check-in.
