Getting around Akrotiri by car
Akrotiri is reached by road, and this page is about the road. The name covers three stops along the south-western tip of the island. The village on the hill, with hotels facing the caldera. The archaeological site below it, the Bronze Age town preserved under volcanic ash and now under a roof. Red Beach, a few minutes further along the coast at the end of the tarmac. The lighthouse is a fourth, beyond the village on a narrow road that ends at its gate.
Each stop has its own meeting point. At the site the driver waits in the car park at the entrance. At Red Beach the car stops at the car park where the road ends; the beach itself is a walk of a few minutes over rock, so leave the cases in the car and the buggy at the hotel. In the village the driver comes to the hotel door or to the closest point a car can turn, and waits 15 minutes free. Say which stop you mean when you book, and whether you want the car to wait.
Akrotiri is far from everywhere except Fira and the port. The airport is 12 km, about 15 minutes. Fira is 13 km, about 15 minutes. Athinios port is 9 km, about 10 minutes. Oia is 24 km, about 30 minutes, the whole island end to end. Perissa and the black beach are 10 minutes east along the south coast.
The site keeps daytime hours that change with the season and it shuts on some days out of season, so check the day before you fix a drop-off time. A visit takes an hour or two under the roof, then most people want the beach or lunch in the village. Booked as an hourly driver, 3 hours minimum, the car waits at each stop with the bags in the boot; booked as transfers, each leg is a separate pickup at a fixed price. Taxis do not cruise through Akrotiri looking for fares.
