Getting around Ammoudi Bay by car

Ammoudi Bay is the small harbour directly below Oia, a row of tavernas at the water's edge under the cliff the village stands on. It has no road link to anywhere except the single lane that drops down from Oia in a series of hairpin bends, so every car, taxi included, ends its journey at the same turning point at the bottom, a short flat walk from the water.

Many visitors reach Ammoudi on foot, down the steps that cut straight through the cliff from the village, and want a car for the climb back. Others prefer to drive down and walk up in daylight. Either way, the pickup point is the turning point at the bottom of the road, never the harbour itself, and the driver waits there with 15 minutes free once the agreed time arrives.

Ammoudi shares Oia's price zone. The airport is 18 km away, about 20 minutes; Athinios port is 25 km, about 30 minutes, on the same road that climbs back up to Oia and on towards Fira. Finikia, the quiet village on Oia's other side, is priced the same as both.

Sunset is the busiest time, with the harbour wall as crowded as the caldera path above it, so a pickup between June and September needs the same margin as one from Oia itself. Catamarans and smaller boats leave from the harbour through the day; a booking timed around a boat's return works better as an open window than a fixed minute, confirmed by message once you are back on land.

Where the driver meets you at Ammoudi Bay

Ammoudi Bay below Oia: fishing boats and tavernas under the red cliff
  1. 1

The road down from Oia is narrow with hairpin bends. The driver waits at the turning point at the bottom, the closest a car can stop to the harbour.

  2. 2

From the turning point it is a short, flat walk to the tavernas and the water. Say if you are coming off a boat, and give us the boat's name and its return time.

  3. 3

Some visitors walk down the steps from Oia village and want the ride back up; others drive down and walk up later. Tell us which way round when you book.

  4. 4

Waiting is free for 15 minutes from the agreed time, at the turning point rather than by the water itself.

Prices from Ammoudi Bay

Fixed price for the whole car, saloon up to 4 passengers, VAT included, the same day and night. Vans and minibuses are priced on the booking page.

Good to know

  • The road down has more bends than its length suggests. Allow a few extra minutes even though Oia itself is close by.
  • Sunset here draws a crowd along the harbour wall as well as in Oia above it, so book the pickup time with margin between June and September.
  • Boat trips out of Ammoudi, catamaran cruises and smaller day boats, run to their own schedule. Give us the return time and the driver checks it before setting off.
  • Swimming off the rocks near the harbour is popular around midday, quieter than the beaches on the other side of the island.
  • A dinner booking at the water often runs later than planned. An open return time, confirmed by message, works better than a fixed minute.

Questions about Ammoudi Bay

Can the taxi bring me down the steps from Oia to Ammoudi?

No. The steps are a footpath, not a road. The driver takes the narrow road down instead and waits at the turning point at the bottom, a short flat walk from the harbour.

How far is Ammoudi Bay from the airport and the port?

The airport is 18 km away, about 20 minutes. Athinios port is 25 km, about 30 minutes, most of it the same road that serves Oia.

Is Ammoudi Bay the same as Oia's port?

It is Oia's only harbour, sometimes called Oia's port, though it takes small boats and day trips rather than ferries. The pickup point is the same turning point used for every ride here.

Is a pickup from Ammoudi possible late at night?

Yes, at any hour, at the same price. Dinner at the harbour often runs past sunset, and a booked car waits at the turning point rather than you searching for one on the road above.
